As a device the nano is much more dependent on connecting to iTunes than the iPod touch since there's no way to download or buy content on the device itself – everything must be downloaded through iTunes on your computer, then copied across.

There's also no Wi-Fi connection, so streaming music isn't a possibility either. The only wireless capability is Bluetooth, which is a new addition in this year's model and adds an extra string to the nano's bow.

The Apps:

Let's start with the Music app. If you're already familiar with iTunes and the concept of playlists then there will be no surprises for you here. It's very similar to the iPod touch app.

You can browse by Song, Artist or Album and it has the Genius Mixes feature, which creates playlists for you based on songs which go together. You get to see album artwork, but it all feels fairly flat as there's no Cover Flow view available.

The Videos app is even more basic – just containing a list of all the videos you've transferred to the device. The Podcasts and Photos app work in just the same way as well, requiring iTunes on your computer to dictate their content.

The power button doubles as a switch for choosing either random or repeat playback modes. As with the last generation Shuffle, this model supports playlists. Since there's no screen, you have to press and hold the Voiceover button. A computer generated voice then reads out the names of the playlists you've transferred over from your computer using iTunes. When it gets to the name of the playlist you want to play, release the Voiceover button and press Play. If you've enabled the option in iTunes on your computer, the voice can also read out the name and artist info for each of your tracks. It works well, and it's arguably no less fiddly than the tiny screens on other budget MP3 players.

For example, if you use Aperture all the time and infrequently use iPhoto, the Fusion Drive and OS X might move the iPhoto library and application to the slower portion of the hard drive, and move Aperture to the faster flash storage.

Grappling with Graphics:

The new Mac mini uses Intel’s much improved HD Graphics 4000 graphics processor. It’s an integrated processor—the graphics processing is built into the main CPU and shares the computer’s main memory. Discrete graphics, on the other hand, are graphics processors that are completely separate and use dedicated video memory. Generally, discrete graphics are preferred over integrated graphics for applications that demand the highest performance.

The HD Graphics 4000 is much better at delivering high frame rates in games than the HD Graphics 3000 processor used previously, but it falls far short of the performance of the discrete AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphic processor. In our Portal 2 test, the new entry-level Mac mini was 27 percent faster than the previous low-end model. However, the previous high-end model with its AMD Radeon discrete graphics was 24 percent faster than the new high-end Mac mini with the integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics.

Two updates help to keep the Air one of the fastest ultrabooks around, while another two make it even more comfortable to use.

When Intel released the mobile versions of its third-generation Core series chips, the MacBook’s were among the first to benefit. In the case of the 2012 Apple MacBook Air we see the low-voltage editions again being pressed into service – this time the Intel Core i5-3427U, specified at 1.8GHz.

Where last year’s Sandy Bridge models were seeing around 17fps in our standard FEAR game test, Ivy Bridge laptops typically get at least a 60% increase in video framerate. In the case of the Apple MacBook Air here, we recorded an impressive 29fps at Maximum settings, indicating that the Air can take on light gaming again as well as the 2010 model with dedicated nVidia graphics.

Looking around the sculpted one-piece aluminium casework, and there are no material differences from the previous model. Except for the revision to MagSafe 2 for the power connector, and the movement of port legends from the left to the right.

MagSafe 2 is electrically (and magnetically) the same as the original safety cable that keeps the charging plug held in place by magnets. But Mk II is very slightly smaller, designed with even slimmer notebooks in mind, so the move to the newer design here is probably as much about unifying the revision across the MacBook line in the coming years.

Not so visible is an upgrade of the webcam built into the screen bezel. This is now listed as a FaceTime HD camera, and it allows calls over Skype or Apple’s video conferencing system to be made at 1280 x 720-pixel size – subject to your internet connection having sufficient speed.

The final tweak we could find on 2012’s MacBook Air is to the cooling fan. Just like the Retina MacBook Pro, the Air now has an asymmetric-blade fan inside to reduce resonance. In use, we can vouch for the extremely quiet operation of the MacBook Air. It’s probably the quietest ultraportable you can find.

There was no mention of Steve Jobs' favourite "one more thing" keynote sign-off at Macworld Expo in January, but the biggest product launch at the annual Mac event could still have a major impact on the Windows-based laptop market - the Apple MacBook Air.

Macworld Expo in San Francisco has become the most highly anticipated event in the IT calendar in recent years, with techies desperate to learn what Steve Jobs has lined up as Apple's biggest product launch of the year.

In 2007, the Apple iPhone captured the imagination of those in the audience and millions of people around the world who monitored Jobs keynote via the web, while the event has previously been used to launch iTunes, the Mac mini and various versions of the iPod.

This year, rather than introducing a completely new product category, Apple chose to launch a variation on a theme, but what a variation it was. The MacBook Air has arrived, a third MacBook model that brings incredibly small size to Apple's laptop line at a premium price, and a model Apple claims to be the world's thinnest laptop.

However, in many ways, the story of this laptop is the story of a series of compromises, all made in order to fit an entire Mac in a 1.3kg package that's 4mm thick at its thinnest point.

The Apple 15 inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display is very thin and very light. Not quite down to the level of the MacBook Air, but at only 1mm thicker than the Air's 17mm it's still incredibly slim for such a feature-packed notebook.

To admirers of the Apple way of building personal computers, it may come as little surprise that the build quality of the retina MacBook is simply outstanding. Lifting the satin aluminium lid – a well-engineered balance between too flappy and too stiff – reveals a very clean deck below.

The keyboard is almost identical to that seen in the Unibody MacBook Pro and MacBook Air: black keys, white legends, backlit when required with the help of a hidden ambient-light sensor. If anything, the keys now seem a little lower profile. But typing action remains a first-class experience. Touch typists rejoice as your WPM will benefit.

The arrival of USB 3.0 is long overdue for the Apple Macintosh, making it all the more welcome on these latest generation all-flash MacBooks. The entry-level Retina MacBook Pro may have 'only' 256GB but with USB 3.0 storage so plentiful, it's now a doodle to expand the SSD with really quick storage on demand from any number of affordable drives, whether disk or solid-state.

Two Thunderbolt ports shows that Apple is definitely taking this interface seriously. A desktop-class Intel Cactus Ridge Thunderbolt chip here should allow two independent 10Gbps high-speed buses.

And without ethernet or FireWire, some people will be immediately reaching for an adaptor to turn one or both those ports back into their favoured interface.

The display is definitely the thing. And it's the component that is both stupendously gorgeous, and just a little bit flawed too.

The retina-level resolution is so much more than plain marketing. The screen is a joy to behold, relieving eyestrain thanks to the way it makes text so sharp. Colour depth from the IPS panel is so rich and saturated, most TN screens will look washed-out and anaemic after you spend time reading from this panel.

Apple has now announced that a 128GB version of the iPad 4 will be available to buy. It will go on sale on 5/2/13 and will cost £639 for Wi-Fi-only and £739 for Wi-Fi and Cellular.

Apple iPad 4 Design and Build Quality

There's no mistaking the iPad 4 from the previous version of Apple's tablet. Oh wait, yes there is. Once again, the iPad looks no different with Apple sticking to the same rectangular shape with rounded corners and edges.

There's no change in dimensions so it's 186 x 241 x 9.4mm and 652g (662g for the cellular model). Of course if you don't like the size of the iPad, there's now the iPad mini as a smaller option.

There's not a great deal of change when it comes to the iPad 4 cameras. Those hoping for an 8Mp rear camera will be disappointed to find it's still the same 5Mp iSight camera found on the iPad 3.

It's unsurprising then that results are similar – a useful camera if you don't mind using a device as large as an iPad for taking snaps. The only change is the addition of a back-illuminated sensor which should help in low light situations.

The bigger, and more useful change is the front facing camera which is now a 1.2Mp FaceTime HD shooter capturing up to 720p footage. This offers a much higher quality picture than before making your Photo Booth pictures better and, provided broadband speeds are fast enough, improved Skype and FaceTime calls.

Apple has finally made its move into the smaller tablet market with the iPad mini. The iPad mini has a 7.9-inch screen and many, but not all, of the features that the 9.7-inch iPad has. Read our iPad mini review to find out more.

Smaller than an iPad, but quite a bit bigger than an iPod touch, the Apple iPad mini is the long-awaited and much-rumoured in-betweener in the brave new world of tablets. Here's our full iPad mini review.

iPad Mini Screen

Although it's the same physical size as its seven-inch rivals, it packs a bigger 7.9in screen. You wouldn't think it, but this extra not-quite-an-inch gives the iPad mini around 35 percent more screen real-estate than a 7in tablet, and the difference is noticeable.

iPad Mini Build

What strikes you as you pick up the iPad mini is how light it is. It's less than half the weight of a third- or fourth-generation iPad, and 23 percent thinner. Despite this, build quality is spectacular and the mini feels as solid as a rock. The mini is also noticeably thinner and lighter than most of its 7in rivals, including the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD.

iPad Mini Cameras

Both cameras on the iPad mini are brilliant, the rear one especially so. It takes sharp photos in dingy conditions (the photo below was taken with just a table lamp lighting the room) and great-looking images with accurate colours in good light.

It's great for videos too (it has stabilisation as well), and you'll feel more at home using this smaller iPad rather than the big version for capturing what's going on. Plus, there's face recognition on both cameras for photos and videos.

iPad Mini Performance

Another similarity with the iPad 2 is the processor. The A5 chip is getting a bit old, but our benchmark results show it can still rub shoulders with the current crop of 7in tablets. Importantly - and this is something benchmarks often fail to reflect - the iPad mini feels snappy in use, whether loading apps, scrolling around maps or browsing the web.

A slight surprise is the presence of Siri - Apple's voice assistant - as it was previously thought the processor was the reason for not including it on the iPad 2. The mini has most of the other headline iOS 6 features as well, including flyover maps and VIP mail, but doesn't get a panorama mode in the Camera app. You can, of course, download any number of apps which will automatically stitch photos together for you. Apple iPad Fourth Generation 128GB Cost

Brings iPad Up to Computer-like Levels of Storage

A 128GB version of the fourth generation iPad will go on sale February 5th, Apple has announced. The tablet will cost $799 in a Wi-Fi-only version, or $929 when paired with 3G/4G cellular. Features will otherwise stay identical to other fourth-gen models, including an A6X processor; iOS 6.1 should come preinstalled.

The addition addresses an occasional complaint about the iPad, which is that although it often functions like a computer, it lacks the storage capacity of something like a Mac. 128GB is the same amount of default storage in a Retina MacBook Pro, and in fact twice the amount that comes with the cheapest MacBook Air. The change may fuel speculation that Apple is planning to drop 16GB iPads, making 32GB the smallest capacity.

The iPod touch now takes a back seat behind the iPhone, but Apple has continued to improve and refine its flagship media player. Arriving two years after its predecessor, the fifth-generation model boasts a thinner build, larger display, faster processor and better cameras. In our full review, we try to determine if the new Touch still has a place among stiff competition from smartphones and tablets.


Design

Where the fourth-generation iPod touch took inspiration from the iPhone 4 and 3GS, the fifth-generation model merges features from the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. The characteristic polished-stainless backside has been replaced with a flattened aluminum housing featuring a choice between five anodization colors: black, grey, pink, yellow, blue or red.

The new device also features the "iPod touch loop," a color-coordinated lanyard that attaches to the lower left corner of the back panel. Luckily the tether is included as an optional accessory, and its mounting point conveniently clicks back into the housing when not needed. We don't see ourselves using the loop, but it makes sense as a safety feature for children.

Display

The new iPod touch integrates a four-inch display, matching the general specs of the iPhone 5. Both panels share the same dimensions and 640x1136 "Retina" resolution, with 326 pixels per inch.

We already covered the new four-inch panel in our iPhone 5 review. In general, we found the new spread to be a great compromise between total display area and one-hand usability. Contrast ratios and brightness appear to be similarly improved with the new Touch, while IPS technology helps broaden the viewing angles out to nearly 180 degrees.

Software

The new iPod touch ships with iOS 6, which we covered in detail in our iPhone 5 review. Users can take advantage of the same improvements, most notably Siri in the case of the Touch. Other additions include Passbook and native Facebook integration, among other features.

iPhone 5 Review

The iPhone 5, like all iPhones before it, is an evolution rather than a revolution but it’s at least on the surface the biggest evolution we’ve seen for years with a new design, a larger screen size and superfast 4G connectivity.

iPhone 5 Design

As ever, we'll kick off with the phone's design and external features. When the phone first arrived, we proclaimed it "the most beautiful and best built phone on the market", and for the most part that still holds up. It remains the case that no other device comes close to matching the fit and finish Apple has achieved on the iPhone 5.

It all kicks off with the etched aluminium back. Gone are the glass back and steel sides of old to be replaced with a single piece of aluminium that’s hewn to form the back and sides. This is etched on the back and sides to create a matt look. As well as looking great it also makes the phone easier to grip and keeps it from slipping quite so easily – the iPhone 4/4S had a remarkable ability to slide off even the flattest looking surface.

With the iPhone 5 screen size having increased the big concern would be that the whole phone becomes cumbersome to use but Apple has avoided this by only increasing the height of the screen, upping it by about 12mm. This small increase makes minimal difference to the usability of the phone, with you still able to reach the full expanse of the screen easily enough.

Alongside the headphone jack are newly designed microphone and speaker grills and of course the new Lightning dock connection. The former are now covered by small drilled holes, rather than one large opening, while the latter is a replacement for the wide, 30-pin dock connector of old.

The new connector will carry audio, HD video, data and of course charge the phone, with adapters available to convert the signal to just about any other type of connection you could name. Lightning is also reversible so you don’t need to worry about which way round you’re plugging it in, and it's a sturdier plug too

Concerns about having to buy new adapters to fit existing docks and chargers remain, as does the fact that Apple didn't simply opt for micro USB like every other phone, but there is no doubting it is a better connection than the old one, which is something we suppose.

Overview

The next-generation MacBook Pro with Retina Display - it's a mouthful of a name. Apple's latest notebook represents the culmination of a number of trends from one of the industry's most visible players - from unibody aluminum construction to soldered-in components; from solid-state storage to the much-vaunted Retina Display.

Apple clearly has a vision for where they want to take portable computing, and while impressive, it has its drawbacks, too. Let's jump into things by taking a look at the MacBook Pro's most talked about feature: its stunningly high resolution display.

Screen

While the sharpness plays a role in how good the screen looks - and the new MacBook Pro's screen looks better than any other notebook that has ever existed, bar none - so does the panel technology. I want to make that clear - if display quality is paramount to you, for whatever reason, this is the only laptop you should remotely be considering. It's simply that good. Apple uses IPS screens in their next-gen MBP, just like in the iPhone and iPad. It's a welcome step up from the screens they've used in the past; as TN panels, they suffered from color distortions and poor viewing angles.

Retina vs Non-Retina

Applications that are "Retina-aware", however, get to employ even more trickery! If you're mucking about in software such as Aperture, iMovie, Final Cut Pro X, or most other Apple applications (Adobe has promised Photoshop updates, but they've not yet been released), the UI elements get doubled, but the media - photos, videos, etc. - get displayed on a 1:1 basis. If you're editing, for example, a 3000:2000 image in Aperture, you'd get to see the entire image displayed on screen, while the UI remains clearly visible. It's a neat sort of hybrid resolution that lets crafty developers really take advantage of super pixel dense displays.

Software that isn't Retina-aware, however, doesn't fare nearly as well. Anything that isn't rendered on screen by some sort of OS API looks fuzzy. That means that any web browsing, unless you use the included Safari browser, isn't going to look so hot. A lot of legacy applications, unless updated, will look similarly.
