With dimensions of 115 x 61 x 12mm (HxWxD) the iPhone is hardly small by phone standards, but Apple made a judgement call in this department. Using the tuned-up, cross-platform Cinebench 9.5 benchmarking software, we compared the MacBook Pro with the Dell Inspiron 9400, which is based around a 2GHz Core Duo chip. In Cinebench's processing test, the laptops were neck and neck. In the real-time 3D tests the Mac wasn't much ahead, which is disappointing for Apple, since the MacBook has a hardcore ATI graphics chip whereas the Inspiron merely has an onboard graphics setup.

This release also sees the return of video playback, a feature removed, and greatly missed from the last nano, but it hasn't regained its ability to shoot video, which the 2009 model was notable for.

The iPod nano now comes in nine different colours – white, grey, black, green, blue, purple, pink, yellow and Product Red.

It's got Apple's new Lightning connector, which replaces the rather large 30-pin Dock connector and as well as a Lightning to USB cable you also get Apple's new improved EarPods earphones in the box.

The new iPod nano runs apps, but it doesn't run a full-fat version of iOS, so you've only got a few basic Apple apps to play with – there's no App Store, and no iTunes Store either. So, what you're looking at here is Music, Videos, Fitness, Podcasts, Photos, Radio, Clock and Voice Memos. Performance:

As a device the nano is much more dependent on connecting to iTunes than the iPod touch since there's no way to download or buy content on the device itself – everything must be downloaded through iTunes on your computer, then copied across.

There's also no Wi-Fi connection, so streaming music isn't a possibility either. The only wireless capability is Bluetooth, which is a new addition in this year's model and adds an extra string to the nano's bow.

The Apps:

Let's start with the Music app. If you're already familiar with iTunes and the concept of playlists then there will be no surprises for you here. It's very similar to the iPod touch app.

You can browse by Song, Artist or Album and it has the Genius Mixes feature, which creates playlists for you based on songs which go together. You get to see album artwork, but it all feels fairly flat as there's no Cover Flow view available.

The Videos app is even more basic – just containing a list of all the videos you've transferred to the device. The Podcasts and Photos app work in just the same way as well, requiring iTunes on your computer to dictate their content.

The iPod Shuffle as always been the smallest and the cheapest of Apple's MP3 players. The last generation was the smallest yet, around the size of an AAA battery, but Apple achieved this miniaturisation by relocating all the buttons from the body of the Shuffle to the in-line remote built into the earphone cable. As well as being fiddly to use, an adaptor was required to use third party earphones.

Thankfully, Apple has seen sense. The latest Shuffle has all the usual playback control buttons located on its body that you would expect. It greatly resembles the second generation Shuffle, but is smaller than that model. It's only slightly thicker than two £1 coins and weighs just 12g. It feels sturdy thanks to its aluminium construction and the integrated clip allows it to be securely fastened to your clothing.

As with previous Shuffles, the standard 3.5mm headphone socket also doubles as a USB port for charging and data transfer using the included adaptor cable. A small indicator light glows orange when the battery is charging and turns green when fully charged. In our tests, the battery lasted just over 17 hours when playing music, which is very impressive for such a small audio player.

The power button doubles as a switch for choosing either random or repeat playback modes. As with the last generation Shuffle, this model supports playlists. Since there's no screen, you have to press and hold the Voiceover button. A computer generated voice then reads out the names of the playlists you've transferred over from your computer using iTunes. When it gets to the name of the playlist you want to play, release the Voiceover button and press Play. If you've enabled the option in iTunes on your computer, the voice can also read out the name and artist info for each of your tracks. It works well, and it's arguably no less fiddly than the tiny screens on other budget MP3 players.

Apple's most important design change in the iPod touch 5th generation is that it now features an elongated widescreen display, just like the iPhone 5. It's a little taller than the last generation at 123mm long, but with virtually the same width, it won't cause smaller pockets or hands any issues.

This is Apple's thinnest and lightest iPod touch yet. It's just 88g in weight, 13g lighter than the last model. However, the pedantic variances in weight and thickness are not what defines this version's in-hand experience. It's the build and the player's lines that count.

The new iPod touch is a very slender rectangular brick, less curvy-backed than its predecessors. The well-defined sides lend the device some substance. Without it, this £250 wafer-thin slice of tech might just feel that bit too feather-like.

The new 2012 iPod touch borrows a few of the design changes made in the iPhone 5. There's the bevelled edges of the aluminium sides and alongside the 3.5mm headphone jack (which has always been on the bottom on the iPod touch) is the new smaller 8-pin Lightning connector in place of the old 30-pin socket.

Suggestions that the Lightning adapter was introduced to keep the iPhone 5 as slim as possible have been poo-poo'd by some, but here the argument makes complete sense. The Lightning connector is slim and small, and fitting in the larger 30-pin type would have been a challenge. However, Apple veterans will doubtless experience more than a few frustrating moments when all they can find is a half-dozen 30-pin Apple cables, but not a single Lightning one.
